HMCAN (Health and Managed Care Association of Nigeria) is the premier umbrella body and self-regulatory organization for accredited Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and managed care operators in Nigeria. Founded in March 1998, we work to promote, protect, and advance the interests of the managed care industry while collaborating with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to achieve universal health coverage.

HMCAN serves multiple critical roles: advocating for favorable policies, collaborating with NHIA and other stakeholders, setting and enforcing industry standards through self-regulation, providing capacity building for health insurance professionals, conducting research and data analysis, and promoting public awareness about health insurance benefits.
HMCAN works closely with the NHIA as the primary umbrella body for licensed HMOs. We collaborate on improving service quality, ensuring compliance with regulations, enhancing enrollee satisfaction, and working towards universal health coverage. We also engage with NHIA on policy development and addressing challenges in the health insurance ecosystem.
While HMCAN works to improve overall service quality and enrollee satisfaction, individual complaints should first be directed to your specific HMO. If unresolved, you can also contact the National Health Insurance Authority. HMCAN addresses systemic issues and works to enforce compliance and standards across all member organizations.
